Update:

The Antoinette Perry Award for Excellence in Broadway Theatre, or the Tonys as they are more informally known, are back next month to toast the top achievements in live Broadway theater performances during the 2024-25 season.

The Tony Awards have been an important part of the Broadway community since their inception in 1947. Winning a Tony is considered one of the highest honors in the theater industry.

The nominees for the 2025 Tonys, which will be hosted by GRAMMY Award-winner and three-time Oscar nominee Cynthia Erivo, were announced this week.

Leading candidates to win a Tony Award in 2025

The musicians who performed the soundtrack to Buena Vista Social Club: The Musical, which leads this year’s nominations with 10, are set to receive a special award - as will the team behind the special effects in Stranger Things: The First Shadow (Jamie Harrison, Chris Fisher, Gary Beestone and Edward Pierce).

Buena Vista Social Club delivers the authentic sound of Havana, featuring songs from the Grammy-winning project produced by Ry Cooder and accompanying film directed by Wim Wenders in 1999. Natalie Venetia Belcon has been nominated for the Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical award, while Saheem Ali is up for Best Direction of a Musical.

Death Becomes Her, an adaptation of the cult 1992 film, and Maybe Happy Ending, a romantic comedy musical about a pair of androids who embrace humanity, also have 10 nominations each. George Clooney (Good Night, and Good Luck), Sarah Snook (The Picture of Dorian Gray) and Bob Odenkirk (Glengarry Glen Ross) could also be walking away with a gong on the night.
