Ukrainian Armed Forces may have shot down a Russian A-50 spy plane, key to Russia’s war strategy

Forget bombers and combat drones: Ukraine may have cornered the Russian military with a potentially devastating loss
The war between Ukraine and Russia isn’t confined to ground combat—it also plays out in the skies, where both nations launch offensives targeting strategic positions and military equipment.
In Ukraine’s case, satellite images suggest its forces may have shot down a Russian Beriev A-50, an airborne early warning and control aircraft. This spy plane serves a range of purposes, including surveillance and intelligence gathering that can be used to launch strikes against enemy forces.
The A-50’s airframe is based on the Ilyushin Il-76 military transport aircraft, but what sets it apart is its powerful radar system, capable of detecting targets at long distances.
It’s estimated that Russia’s military operates several of these aircraft, though one unit was reportedly hit in recent days at the Ivanovo air base inside Russia, according to various sources, including the news outlet BT.
A model shot down in 2024
This isn’t the first time Russia has lost one of these aircraft. In January 2023, an A-50 was shot down over the Sea of Azov under unclear circumstances.
This year’s Ukrainian strike comes amid an ongoing offensive targeting Russian air bases that house strategic bombers such as the Tu-95, Tu-22, and Tu-160. The attack also coincided with Russia’s latest large-scale offensive against Ukraine.
