U.S. issues travel warning for Italy: here’s what you need to know if you plan to visit this summer 2025
The country is one of the most popular destinations for many Americans offering spectacular city breaks in the likes of Rome, Bologna, Florence and Venice.

Italian food is beloved globally, and experiencing it authentically in Italy is a major draw. From pizza in Naples to pasta in Emilia-Romagna, regional specialties, fresh ingredients, and the communal aspect of Italian dining are highly appreciated by American tourists.

Beyond its cities, Italy offers diverse and breathtaking landscapes, including the dramatic cliffs of the Amalfi Coast, the picturesque lakes of the north (Como, Garda), the rolling hills of Tuscany with vineyards and olive groves, and the spectacular peaks of the Dolomites.
Level 2 warning
However, future travellers to Italy will need to be aware that earlier this week, the US State Department issued a Level 2 travel warning for Italy, urging travelers to “exercise increased caution” due to terrorism.
Italy previously had the basic Level 1 advisory that most European countries share, simply telling travelers to “exercise normal precautions” when visiting.
However, due to the increased threat of terrorist-related violence, the State Department increased Italy up to Level 2.
There are four levels for international travel advisories: Level 1 (“exercise normal precautions”), Level 2 (“exercise increased caution”), Level 3 (“reconsider travel”) and Level 4 (“do not travel”).
