Akira Toriyama’s original design for Freezer: A terrifying concept that was discarded
He is one of the most popular villains in Dragon Ball and has undergone nearly ten transformations.

Freezer is one of the most iconic villains in Dragon Ball, known for his multiple transformations and pivotal role in Goku’s Super Saiyan awakening. However, before settling on his final design, Akira Toriyama had a very different vision for the character—one that was larger, more muscular, and far more intimidating.
Toriyama’s original concept: A towering menace
According to Shūeisha’s official Dragon Ball archives, Toriyama initially envisioned Freezer as a tall, heavily built warrior, resembling Dodoria in stature.

Early sketches depict him with bulging veins on his head, possibly meant to symbolize his immense power and mental strength.
Had this design been used, Freezer’s role in the Namek saga might have been very different, as his sheer physical dominance could have eliminated the need for multiple transformations.
The evolution of Freezer’s transformations
From Dragon Ball Z’s Namek arc to Dragon Ball Super: Broly, Freezer has undergone nearly ten transformations, each with distinct forms and colors.
His latest evolution, Black Freezer, remains his strongest form, solidifying his status as one of Dragon Ball’s most enduring antagonists.
