Bad news for X-Men fans: This is how the delay of the two Avengers movies could affect the reboot of the mutant saga
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is reeling from significant delays in its upcoming films.

It’s not the first time we’ve mentioned it, but after Avengers: Endgame, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has had a very bumpy road. For every Spider-Man: No Way Home, there’s been a The Eternals; for every Thunderbolts*, a The Marvels. This inconsistency has led to the announcement this week that the next films to close the Multiverse Saga, Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, have been pushed back to December 18, 2026, and December 17, 2027, respectively.
Even though filming of Doomsday has already begun, these changes mean that the MCU release schedule is being reconfigured, bringing with it both good and bad news for fans. On the one hand, we have Spider-Man: Brand New Day arriving “earlier” than planned, when it was intended to bridge the gap between these two films. But the bad news is, when will the other already announced Marvel movies arrive? Especially, the return of the mutants and the X-Men to the movies.
Will the X-Men’s return to the big screen take a long time?
Although no release dates have been announced, the return of the X-Men to theaters is one of the most anticipated movies by fans. This 6-month delay means that we won’t see anything from Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters until 2028 at the earliest. It is worth remembering that currently, there are a total of 5 projects already announced for the future of the MCU post-Phase 6. These include Armor Wars, Black Panther 3, the sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, the X-Men movie, and the return of Blade, a movie that paused its development in March 2025.
As for the Sons of the Atom, they have slowly been introduced in the MCU, with appearances in The Marvels and Deadpool and Wolverine, but the team has yet to arrive in full. For their film, Jake Schreier, director of Thunderbolts*, is currently in negotiations to direct. How long will it take to see them? Only time will tell.
