FromSoftware

FromSoftware wants you to return to Elden Ring, and its new update is the key: two new classes and a weapon

FromSoftware’s latest update brings fresh classes with a weapon that otherwise takes a lot of hours to get.

Elden Ring Tarnished Edition

FromSoftware is giving players even more reasons to return to the Lands Between, with its latest update introducing two new starting classes and a high-tier weapon. However, the timing of this update has raised eyebrows—it arrives just weeks before Elden Ring: Nightreign, making fans wonder if the two are connected.

The new classes: Knight of Ides & Heavy Knight

The update adds two fresh starting classes, each catering to distinct playstyles:

  • Knight of Ides – This class features sleek armor inspired by Demon’s Souls’ Fluted Armor and starts with Milady, a Light Greatsword that was previously only obtainable by defeating a late-game boss in the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. The weapon blends speed and power, making it ideal for Dexterity or Strength/Dex hybrid builds.
  • Heavy Knight – A brutal powerhouse, this class wears imposing black plate armor and wields a massive curved greatsword, resembling a colossal falchion. It’s perfect for players who prefer overwhelming strength over finesse.

Both classes provide early access to high-tier gear, allowing players to jump into the action with powerful weapons and armor.

Could Nightreign be influencing this update?

While FromSoftware hasn’t officially stated a connection, the timing is suspiciously close to the release of Elden Ring: Nightreign on May 30, 2025. Unlike the base game, Nightreign features eight predefined classes called Nightfarers, instead of letting players create their own. Interestingly, some of the Nightfarers —like the Guardian and Raider—, bear a strong resemblance to the Knight of Ides and Heavy Knight.

It’s possible that FromSoftware is aligning this update with Nightreign’s release, introducing mechanics and class designs that subtly reflect what’s coming in the spin-off. If so, this could mean shared lore, interconnected gameplay mechanics, or even a deeper narrative tie between the two games.

What else is new?

Beyond the new classes, the update also introduces:

  • Four new armor sets, including the ones tied to the new classes.
  • New combat techniques, expanding the game’s already deep combat system.
  • Three new looks for Torrent, giving players more customization options for their trusty spirit steed.

When does the update release?

The update is expected to launch alongside the Nintendo Switch 2, with speculation pointing to a June 5, 2025 release. PC, PlayStation, and Xbox players will receive the new content simultaneously, ensuring that everyone gets access to the new classes and gear.

With new classes, weapons, and customization options, this update is shaping up to be one of Elden Ring’s biggest post-launch additions. The close timing to Nightreign suggests that FromSoftware may be laying the groundwork for deeper connections between the two games. Whether or not these classes directly tie into Nightreign, they certainly hint at what’s coming next in the world of Elden Ring.
