George R.R. Martin reveals what his hardest ‘Game of Thrones’ moment to write was

In the five main novels of ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ there are hard moments, very hard. Often bloody and brutal, but none like the one that takes place in ‘A Storm of Swords’, the third novel of the saga. In an interview with Time, George R.R. Martin confirmed that the Red Wedding has been the most shocking moment.

“I knew the Red Wedding was coming and I’d been planning it all along, but when I came to that chapter, which occurs two-thirds of the way through A Storm of Swords, I found I couldn’t write that chapter. I skipped over that chapter and wrote the hundreds of pages that followed. The entire book was done, except for the scene with the Red Wedding.”

Ultimately, he finished the novel, but it was not easy. “It was some of the hardest writing I’ve ever done, but it’s also one of the most powerful scenes I’ve ever done.”

The context of the Red Wedding of ‘Game of Thrones’

At the Red Wedding, Edmure Tully marries Roslin Frey, but the whole ceremony is a trap by the twisted Walden Frey, who, irritated that Robb Stark has not kept his promise to marry one of his daughters, decides to murder the Stark family during the wedding. In addition to Robb and his mother, many of his vassals die, although the members of the family who were not there survive.

George R.R. Martin is still working on ‘Winds of Winter‘, the penultimate novel in ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’. The book has been delayed for more than a decade and there is still no publication date. In the meantime, the writer has acknowledged that he may never finish it, but has indicated that it remains his top priority.
