Although we may think that Hideo Kojima is doing fantastically well -which he really is-, the creative genius has gone through some really tough times. It was during the development of Death Stranding 2 when the Japanese creative turned 60 years old, something that as he has confessed in Edge magazine, has made him think about many things about the future.

Kojima has several projects in his plans, including Physint, the espionage game for PlayStation, the Xbox exclusive, OD... and the third installment of Death Stranding, which he has already expressed doubts that he will direct himself. He has therefore taken steps to protect his ideas his ideas safe even after his death.

I gave a USB stick with all my ideas on it to my personal assistant, kind of like a will,” Kojima tells Edge in the interview. “Perhaps they could continue to make things after I’m gone at Kojima Productions… This is a fear for me: what happens to Kojima Productions after I’m gone? I don’t want them to just manage our existing IP..”

Kojima was afraid for his life during the pandemic

During the pandemic, Kojima was very worried about his health, as he explains. “Turning 60 was less of a turning point in my life than my experiences during the pandemic,” he continues. “I fell seriously ill at that time, and also had an eye operation. Until then, I didn’t think I was old, you know? I just didn’t feel my age, and I assumed I would be able to create for as long as I live.”

“But then I became sick, and I couldn’t create anything. And I saw lots of people around me passing away at that time,” he says. “I was confronted with death. Of course, I recovered, but now I was thinking, ‘Wait, how many years do I have left to make a game or a film?’ Perhaps I have 10 years?”

Kojima also explains how this serious health condition made him think about making the leap to cinema for good. However, both Guillermo del Toro and Nicolas Winding Refn, who appear in Death Stranding, encouraged him to continue working on video games. He also says that seeing how much the fans wanted him to make something like Metal Gear made him want to create Physint.
