How does the lockpick work in Oblivion? Learn how to pick the best doors and locks

With the arrival of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, players are once again immersed in a world filled with iconic mechanics and classic gameplay. For those who prefer to move in the shadows and join the ranks of master thieves, lockpicking is a crucial skill—one that must be learned, practiced, and perfected to access the most well-guarded treasures and earn the respect of key factions within the game.

Lockpicking tips and tricks for Oblivion Remastered

Interacting with a locked door or chest will trigger the lockpicking mini-game. In this interface, players move the pick horizontally to select a tumbler, and then vertically to push it upward. The tip of the pick indicates which tumbler is active. As you push the tumbler, it compresses against its spring—timing is everything here.

Lockpicking in Oblivion Remastered is a test of patience and precision. To succeed, you must carefully watch the movement of each spring. The ideal moment to press the action button is when the last spring pushes the tumbler to the top and it pauses briefly before falling. Attempting to lock it while the tumbler is still rising or falling will result in a broken pick.

Occasionally, tumblers will move too quickly. When this happens, it’s best to drop it and try again rather than risk snapping your pick. A reliable technique is to gently push the tumbler until it starts moving slowly—this slow rise signals that it will stay in the top position for a moment, giving you a better chance to lock it in place.

In some cases, sound cues can also help. As you push a tumbler, listen for a “click.” A slow-moving tumbler often produces a “click-click,” where the second sound is higher in pitch. That higher-pitched click marks the right moment to press the action button.

Where can I get lockpicks in Oblivion Remastered?

Lockpicks can sometimes be found on random bandits or goblins, but the most reliable source is Shady Sam, a mysterious NPC located just outside the walls of the Imperial City near the Elven Gardens district. If you’re a member of the Thieves Guild, you can also purchase lockpicks from fences.
