‘Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning’ has divided critics, but it debuted with an 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes
The eighth and final film in the franchise premiered at the festival and will be in theaters next week.

‘Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning’ will be the eighth film in the saga started by Brian De Palma in 1996 and starring Tom Cruise ever since. It is the sequel to Deadly Reckoning, released two years ago, and will bring the character of Ethan Hunt to a close. Surprisingly, the film, directed by Christopher McQuarrie, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, which is not accustomed to showing such commercial films.
Critics were divided on the film after its first viewing. While some said it was the best ending to the legendary saga, others were somewhat disappointed by the result. “Plodding, overwritten, and unnecessarily convoluted,” read the review in The Nerds of Color. Nevertheless, the film debuted with an impressive 88% approval rating on the website Rotten Tomatoes.
Rotten Tomatoes ratings for all Mission: Impossible films
‘Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning’ follows agent Ethan Hunt, whose mission this time is to stop Gabriel from controlling an artificial intelligence program called “The Entity,” a technological powerhouse. Despite its 88% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is good, the film has one of the saga’s lowest percentages, showing its level.
The most popular on the website is ‘Mission: Impossible - Fallout’ (2018), the sixth film in the franchise, with a 98% approval rating. It is followed by its predecessor, ‘Mission: Impossible - Deadly Reckoning – Part 1’, with 96%. Third place is a tie between ‘Rogue Nation’ and ‘Ghost Protocol’, the fifth and fourth films, respectively, with 94%. The three remaining films are below the percentage of the film that was recently released at the Cannes Film Festival: ‘Mission: Impossible’ (65%), ‘Mission: Impossible II’ (57%), and ‘Mission: Impossible III’ (71%).
‘Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning’ opens in theaters on May 23.
