Neither delayed nor suspended: Shonen Jump abruptly ends two series at once

Shueisha’s iconic manga magazine cancels two major series after only one year of publication

Shonen Jump is one of the most influential manga magazines, and Shueisha’s publication has become a global reference point. Many legendary manga series like Dragon Ball, One Piece, Naruto, My Hero Academia, Slam Dunk, and Bleach were born in its pages. But being part of this elite lineup doesn’t guarantee a series’ survival, as shown by the recent cancellation of Get Away, Matsumoto -100 Days Escape- and The World of SKK Girls after only a year in circulation.

How Shonen Jump works in Japan

Even within such a prestigious platform, manga must prove their popularity week by week. Readers play a key role, voting through surveys and rankings that determine whether a series continues or is replaced. These two 2024 series were discontinued early, likely due to low popularity or lack of reader engagement.

Get Away, Matsumoto -100 Days Escape-, by Tsuneharu Okusu, debuted in 2024 and wrapped up after just 27 chapters. The story follows Matsumoto, a former cycling champion now delivering packages on a bike, who suddenly finds himself in the middle of a shocking event. Shueisha described it as a fast-paced, intense action series, portraying a fallen hero who might get a second chance in extreme circumstances.

The World of SKK Girls, by Taishou Akatsuka, ran for 34 chapters and depicted a strange, human-less world inhabited only by three girls: Katana, Saya, and Kodachi. Although light-hearted on the surface, the story hinted at a dark mystery beneath the calm. Shueisha promoted it as a mix of innocence and suspense, offering an original concept from the author of Muto to Sato.

The future of Shonen Jump now depends on newer hits like Kagurabachi, Centuria, Spy x Family, and Dandadan, especially after recent farewells to major names like Jujutsu Kaisen and My Hero Academia, and with One Piece seemingly approaching its final arc.
