New ‘Dragon Ball’ illustrations: Toyotarou pays tribute to Toriyama with his take on this classic character
The new drawing is a throwback to Roshi’s first fight with Goku in the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament.

As part of the April 2025 edition of “Toyotarou Drew It!!”, ’Dragon Ball Super’ artist Toyotarou has honored the late Akira Toriyama with a new illustration of Master Roshi. This monthly series allows Toyotarou to recreate classic ’Dragon Ball’ characters in his own style, and this time, he chose to highlight Roshi’s battle against Za Priccio from the Universe Survival Saga.
Master Roshi vs. Za Priccio—A legendary moment
The illustration captures Master Roshi’s Thunder Shock Surprise technique, which he used to immobilize Za Priccio during the Tournament of Power. In the anime, Roshi’s attack allowed Tien Shinhan to finish the fight by knocking Za Priccio out of the ring with his Tri-Beam technique.
This moment was a throwback to Roshi’s first fight with Goku in the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament, where he used the same move to freeze his young student. In that battle, Goku unknowingly transformed into his Great Ape form, breaking free from Roshi’s attack.

Toyotarou’s tribute to Toriyama
Toyotarou has long been recognized as Toriyama’s artistic successor, working closely with him on ’Dragon Ball Super’. His latest illustration not only honors Master Roshi’s legacy but also serves as a heartfelt tribute to Toriyama’s impact on the franchise.
With this new artwork, Toyotarou continues to celebrate Toriyama’s legendary characters, ensuring that their influence remains strong in ’Dragon Ball Super’. Fans can find the illustration on the official Dragon Ball website, where Toyotarou regularly shares his latest creations.
