IO Interactive, the studio behind the acclaimed Hitman saga, announces the imminent release of a new Agent 007 video game.

New James Bond video game already has a name and will be shown this week

This week is shaping up to be one of the most exciting of the year for the gaming world. Not only is the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, but also the Summer Game Fest kicks off, with the presentation of new titles as has become a summer tradition. And prior to the ceremony, one of the first titles we will see at Geoff Keighley’s event has been announced: the new James Bond game.

Through a post on X (formerly Twitter), IO Interactive announced the reveal of First Light 007. The tweet is quite concise, mentioning “Earn the Number in 007 First Light, a new game by IO Interactive. The mission brief is headed your way soon. Stay tuned for more information.” The accompanying image shows what appears to be James Bond himself, subtly illuminated by a single beam of light.

Although no further details are given, we can assume that the presentation of this title will be given as part of the Summer Game Fest broadcast. As for the game, its title and hashtag confirm what was previously mentioned by producer Christian Elverdam about the game being an origin story of the secret agent.

The return of James Bond to video games

Agent 007 has been absent from the world of video games for a long time. The last James Bond gaming adventure we experienced was 2012’s 007 Legends. Although there were some attempts to develop new titles in the following years, it wasn’t until 2020 when IO Interactive, known for their Hitman franchise, revealed that they were working on a game under the tentative name Project 007.

Now, with an official name and a presentation scheduled for later this week, fans of the secret agent can finally breathe a sigh of relief. This news comes as a ray of hope, especially considering the uncertainty surrounding James Bond’s cinematic future following Amazon Studios’ acquisition of the rights.
