Nintendo holds firm on Switch 2 pricing despite Trump tariffs impacting costs

Nintendo updated it’s website, and the Nintendo Switch 2 pricing remains the same.

In an unexpected twist, Nintendo has decided to stay true to its original pricing for the highly anticipated Switch 2 console and its accessories. Despite tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump threatening to disrupt global manufacturing costs, the company has resisted the urge to raise prices. It’s a move that’s as bold as Mario jumping headfirst into a warp pipe.

Navigating the tariff jungle

The tariffs, which slap hefty duties of 46% on goods from Vietnam and 34% on goods from China, have caused ripples across industries. Many companies have scrambled to adjust their pricing, but not Nintendo. The gaming giant appears to have absorbed the increased costs without passing them onto customers, or so it seems.

Switch 2 pricing stays cool

President Trump’s global tariffs made Nintendo delay the pre-orders in the U.S., and then also in Canada. Mexico, the third commercial partner of the region, never even got a pre-order window in the first place.

“Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. will not start April 9, 2025, in order to assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions. Nintendo will update timing at a later date. The launch date of June 5, 2025, is unchanged,” stated the company to Gamespot.

“Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in Canada will not start on April 9, 2025 in order to align with the timing of pre-orders to be determined in the U.S.,” Nintendo of Canada said in a statement to MobileSyrup. “Nintendo will provide updated information at a later date. The launch date of June 5, 2025 is unchanged.”

Even though the preorders remain delayed in the U.S. and Canada, when Nintendo recently updated its website, fans were relieved to see no surprise price hikes. The Switch 2 will still retail at $450 in the U.S., while accessories will also maintain an unchanged price. With the console’s launch set for June 5, 2025, gamers have something to celebrate, no financial heartbreak added to the wait.

It turns out that Nintendo had stopped it’s website’s activities to update and prepare for the Nintendo Switch 2’s launch, and that struck understandable fear into the users about a possible rise in prices due to tariffs. Fortunately, that was wrong, and Nintendo is keeping the prices the same, for now at least.

Playing the long game

Nintendo’s steadfast pricing strategy may be more than a goodwill gesture; it’s likely a calculated move to strengthen its reputation in turbulent times. By keeping prices stable, the company signals reliability and reinforces its connection to loyal fans. But can this strategy hold up against the financial pressure of looming tariffs? Only time will tell if Nintendo will emerge victorious or face new challenges in profitability.

Another notable detail is that users can have a first look at the new microSD Express cards that the Switch 2 will need to expand its storage space. It’s priced at $59.99 for 256GB, which is certainly more expensive than regular microSD cards, but not as much as other models in the market. These cards have been rare so far, but if they are faster, and more efficient, the price might drop as they become more popular and are developed further.

In a world where pricing adjustments are almost inevitable, Nintendo stands as a beacon of consistency, promising Switch 2 fans the fun they deserve, at the price they expected. Whether this approach becomes a masterstroke or a financial gamble, time can only tell, if it even stays this way.
