With the Nintendo Switch 2 set to launch tomorrow, June 5, retailers are already preparing for high demand and potential shortages. In an unusual move, Nintendo has reportedly sent branded “Out of Stock” signs to stores in advance, anticipating that the console will sell out quickly.

Nintendo is ready for high demand in U.S. stores

According to reports, the signs are meant to:

  • Help store employees manage customer inquiries about availability.
  • Signal high demand—creating a sense of urgency for buyers.
  • Serve as indirect marketing, reinforcing the console’s popularity.

One store employee shared an image of the sign, joking:

“Got these signs from Nintendo—they have a sense of humor.”

Switch 2 pre-orders already sold out

Retailers like Amazon, Currys, and Target have already listed the console as “currently unavailable”, with many pre-orders selling out instantly. In Japan, demand has been so overwhelming that Nintendo received 2.2 million applications for its pre-order lottery.

Some stores, like Smyths, have confirmed they will have limited stock available at midnight launches, but many customers may still be met with the “Out of Stock” signs Nintendo has provided.

Nintendo’s decision to send preemptive “Out of Stock” signs highlights the massive demand for the Switch 2. Whether this is a smart marketing move or just practical preparation, one thing is clear: getting your hands on a Switch 2 at launch won’t be easy.
