The Nintendo Switch 2 has moved away from standard microSD cards, requiring microSD Express instead. While this format isn’t new, it has remained relatively obscure until now. Here’s why Nintendo made the switch and which cards are best for expanding storage.

Yeah, that’s, uh… that’s definitely a microSD Express Card.

What is microSD Express?

MicroSD Express was originally developed to provide SSD-like speeds in a compact form. Unlike traditional microSD cards, which use the UHS-I interface, microSD Express integrates NVMe technology, allowing for significantly faster read and write speeds.

Despite its advantages, microSD Express never gained widespread adoption because:

  • Higher cost – These cards are more expensive than standard microSD.
  • Limited device support – Few consumer electronics supported the format.
  • Standard microSD was “good enough” – Most devices didn’t require ultra-fast storage speeds.

Now, with the Nintendo Switch 2, microSD Express is finally seeing mainstream adoption.

Why does the Switch 2 need microSD Express?

Nintendo’s decision to use microSD Express is driven by the increased demands of modern gaming. The Switch 2 features:

  • Higher-resolution textures – Games require faster data streaming.
  • Improved load times – NVMe speeds help reduce waiting times.
  • Larger game sizes – Some titles exceed 50GB, making fast storage essential.

By using microSD Express, the Switch 2 ensures smooth performance for digital games.

Best microSD Express cards for Switch 2

If you’re looking to expand storage, here are some of the top microSD Express cards available (you can identify them by looking for an “EX” or the word “Express” printed on the card):

  • SanDisk 256GB microSD Express – Officially licensed, featuring Super Mario branding, with speeds up to 880MB/s read and 650MB/s write.
  • Samsung 256GB microSD Express – Another officially licensed option, offering fast storage expansion.
  • Lexar 1TB Play PRO microSD Express – A high-capacity option, ideal for large digital libraries.
  • PNY microSD Express – A budget-friendly choice, offering fast speeds at a lower price.

These cards ensure smooth gameplay and quick load times, making them essential for digital game collections.
