Nintendo Switch 2’s LCD screen struggles with HDR: should you be concerned?
Most LCD screens have a bad HDR capability, Nintendo’s newest console is no exception.

The Nintendo Switch 2 has introduced HDR support, but according to GamingTech’s analysis, its LCD screen doesn’t deliver the best HDR gaming experience. While this might sound disappointing, it’s actually expected, as LCD technology generally struggles with contrast and brightness levels.
GamingTech’s findings
GamingTech’s tests reveal that the Switch 2’s LCD panel reaches a maximum brightness of 450 nits, which is below ideal HDR standards. Some key observations include:
- Raised black levels—preventing deep contrast.
- Limited brightness—HDR content lacks the punchy highlights seen on OLED or Mini-LED screens.
- Better HDR in docked mode—games like Cyberpunk 2077 show improved HDR performance when played on an external display.
Compared to OLED screens, which achieve true blacks and higher brightness, the Switch 2’s LCD panel struggles to fully utilize HDR.
Should you be concerned?
While the Switch 2’s HDR performance isn’t groundbreaking, it’s not a major issue for most players. Many LCD screens have similar limitations, and HDR gaming on handhelds is still relatively new. If you’re playing in docked mode on a high-quality HDR TV, you’ll likely get a much better experience.
The Nintendo Switch 2’s LCD screen doesn’t offer true HDR, but that’s expected given the technology. While OLED and Mini-LED displays provide better contrast and brightness, the Switch 2’s docked mode still allows for decent HDR gaming on compatible TVs.
