Pokémon TCG Pocket is going all out, and very soon it will allow players to get a new Rayquaza ex card for free, one of the Legendary Pokémon from Hoenn and one of the most powerful in the franchise. This is all part of a special event celebrating the game’s six-month anniversary. To get this free card, players will need to participate in a limited-time solo event. The best part? You’ll be able to get not just one, but two copies. Below, we’ll share all the important details.

Through a press release, Pokémon TCG Pocket announced that from Wednesday, April 30 at 6:00 AM UTC until Tuesday, May 13 at 5:59 AM UTC, a new solo event will be held where players can earn new promotional cards, including Rayquaza ex. In short, you’ll need to complete various battles against AI opponents to claim the rewards. Additionally, by completing special missions, players will also have the chance to earn a second copy of the Rayquaza ex card, along with other themed accessories and bonus rewards such as a Sky Forme Shaymin coin and a new game mat.

Pokémon TCG Pocket will give away two copies of the Rayquaza ex card and other accessories to celebrate its six-month anniversary.

This is a pretty interesting gift that could affect the meta. Broadly speaking, Rayquaza ex is very similar to Dragonite, as they share the same move: Draco Meteor. To use it, four Energy of any color are required, and its effect is that it randomly selects four opposing Pokémon, dealing 40 damage for each one chosen.

Rayquaza ex’s Draco Meteor is slightly weaker than Dragonite’s, as it can deal up to 160 damage instead of 200, spread across all of the opponent’s Pokémon. However, its versatility is far superior for two reasons. First, Rayquaza ex is a Basic Pokémon — meaning it can be played immediately, unlike Dragonite, which must evolve — and the Energy required for its attack can be of any type or color. This means Rayquaza ex can be integrated into almost any deck or strategy as a toolbox option, especially in decks with high Energy generation capacity like Dialga ex, Misty, Gardevoir, or Manaphy.

The new Rayquaza ex card is very similar in concept to the Dragonite card from the Formidable Genes set.

Now that you know the great potential of Rayquaza ex, mark the event dates on your calendar, as it will only be possible to obtain two copies of this interesting card between April 30th, when the new expansion Celestial Guardians debuts, and May 13th. This Legendary Pokémon from Generation III is set to become one of the most relevant cards in the new meta, and its great versatility may make it a very popular choice in a wide range of strategies. With Rayquaza ex available to all players and Celestial Guardians introducing Alola Pokémon to the game, Pokémon TCG Pocket enters a new phase with big promises for the metagame.
