Rockstar paves the way for GTA 6 and raises the price of Red Dead Redemption 2: here’s its new price in some countries

Both installments of Red Dead Redemption are going up in price in certain markets - a ploy to justify the price of GTA 6 when it comes out?

Grand Theft Auto VI is once again at the center of Rockstar-related news, though not for positive reasons this time. Several of its older titles, including Red Dead Redemption (2010) and its sequel, Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018), have recently received a price increase in certain countries. Although there is no official reason for this, it seems likely that the company is trying to maximize profits from its catalog ahead of the launch of GTA 6 in 2026.

Red Dead Redemption 1 and 2 are increasing in price in certain countries, and all signs point to Rockstar paving the way for GTA 6’s price

Apart from the official news about Grand Theft Auto VI, a rumor has gained strength in recent months: Rockstar is considering launching the game at $100 to cover its exorbitant development costs and take advantage of the huge interest in this highly anticipated video game. Although there is no solid confirmation of this information, there are already signs pointing in this direction.

The first of these is the price increase of the digital versions of Red Dead Redemption and Red Dead Redemption 2 in certain markets. According to Pure Xbox and information we have corroborated, the prices of these two titles have risen from £24.99 to £29.99 and from £54.99 to £59.99, respectively, in certain countries, such as the United Kingdom. While these price hikes don’t affect other countries, they have occurred in the Czech Republic, Chile, and Brazil. Notably, the price of Red Dead Redemption in Brazil has surged by 50%.

Rockstar has not yet provided an official explanation for this controversial decision, which has sparked rumors and speculation among its fans. Although these measures have not yet been applied globally, it is not unreasonable to think that Rockstar is testing a new policy of higher prices in certain markets before implementing it worldwide.

Let’s remember that these are two old video games; Red Dead Redemption was originally released in 2010 and in 2023 the port/remaster was released on other platforms such as PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch, while the game finally arrived on PC in 2024. Red Dead Redemption 2, on the other hand, was released in 2018, so it will be seven years old in 2025. Rockstar would be, at the same time, using the perennial interest in these video games to optimize their economic performance, regardless of their age, and preparing users for the much-feared price - not yet confirmed, mind you - of $100 GTA 6.

In any case, these limited price increases only apply to digital versions of video games, and not to physical versions. This has turned the issue into a new point of contention in the format war between physical and digital formats. It is a very good example that while digital offers the benefit of immediacy, its main “but” is that distribution is totally controlled by the companies, including the selling price.
