Russo brothers flop on Netflix with one of the most expensive movies in history, and Marvel shudders
The directors of the next ‘Avengers’ movies, the great hope of the MCU, have had three fiascos in a row, and the latest one, which is coming soon to Netflix, seems to be the worst of all.

Since leaving Marvel, the Russo brothers have not been able to get back on their feet. First there was ‘Cherry’ in 2021, a war drama about post-traumatic stress starring Tom Holland. It was a bust, but it had a run. Then came ‘The Gray Man’, back in 2022; a thriller that managed to waste the talents of Ryan Gosling and Ana de Armas. And now comes ‘The Electric State’, with which we’ll see what the public says, but the critics have already passed judgment. It has a 10% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and is the worst reviewed movie of both filmmakers' careers.
Given its protagonists, you couldn’t expect much critical acclaim either. On the one hand, Millie Bobby Brown, who claims she doesn’t watch movies and only makes on-demand movies that go straight to Netflix. On the other, Chris Pratt, who has already become a Hollywood meme for appearing in almost everything with virtually the same performance. With both of them, “The Electric State” tells the story of “an orphaned teen hits the road with a mysterious robot to find her long-lost brother, teaming up with a smuggler and his wisecracking sidekick..”
The movie cost 320 million dollars and there are only five more expensive movies in the history of cinema. Critics say it is difficult to see where so much money went. Certainly into the pockets of the Russo family, the main characters and the stars who voice the various androids that appear throughout the movie. Anthony Mackie, Woody Harrelson, Brian Cox... they all work without being seen. There’s little more justification to see ‘The Electric State’ on the following list.
The most expensive films in cinema history
- ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’ - $410 million
- ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ - $365 million
- ‘Avengers: Endgame’ - $356 million
- ‘Avatar: The Way of the Water’ - 350 to 400 million
- ‘Fast X’ - 340 million
The Electric State' would have cost more than blockbusters like ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, ‘Justice League’, ‘Indiana Jones and the Knife of Destiny’ or ‘Star Wars: Episode IX - The Return of the Jedi’. Of course, all the alarms are going off at Marvel, where the Russo’s were supposed to return after this project to direct ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars. Scheduled for release in 2026 and 2027 respectively, both films are the great hope of an MCU in crisis and seem to be in the hands of two filmmakers who seem to have lost their touch.
