The anime that saved this actress from poverty and launched her to stardom
From struggling to afford food to winning Japan’s top voice acting award, Aoi Koga’s journey is one of perseverance and passion.

Born in Kyūshū, Japan, Aoi Koga grew up dreaming of becoming a voice actress, inspired by anime classics like ‘Pokémon’ and ‘One Piece’. However, in a society where anime was often seen as childish, she hesitated to pursue her passion openly.
During her high school years, she told a teacher she wanted to work in radio broadcasting, a half-truth designed to mask her real ambition. Her family supported her decision, unaware that her true goal was to break into the anime industry.
In 2014, she was accepted into 81 Produce, one of Japan’s most prestigious voice acting agencies. She moved to Tokyo to train professionally, but the transition was far from easy. Financial struggles forced her to live on a diet of rice, and she spent years taking minor roles before landing her breakthrough opportunity.
The Role That Changed Everything
In 2018, at the age of 25, Koga was cast as Kaguya Shinomiya in ‘Kaguya-sama: Love is War’. The role transformed her career, earning her widespread recognition and opening doors to major projects.
Her performance was so well received that she won Best Actress in a Leading Role at the 14th Seiyū Awards, Japan’s most prestigious voice acting honor.
Since then, she has voiced characters in hit anime and video games, including:
- ‘Kimetsu no Yaiba’
- ‘JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable’
- ‘Genshin Impact’
- ‘Dead or Alive Xtreme Venus Vacation’
A Career Built on Determination
Now at 31 years old, Koga has cemented her place in the anime industry. She has proven that persistence and passion can overcome even the toughest obstacles.
Her journey, from struggling to afford food to becoming one of Japan’s most celebrated voice actresses, is a testament to her unwavering dedication.
