If the director of Interstellar, Inception, Memento, Oppenheimer, and the upcoming The Odyssey recommends something, we should probably listen, right? Science fiction is one of Christopher Nolan’s favorite genres, so it’s no surprise that one of his favorite films is The Tree of Life, directed by Terrence Malick, also known for The Thin Red Line.

The Tree of Life starred Jessica Chastain (Interstellar, Take Shelter) and Brad Pitt (Fight Club, Babylon) and was released in 2011. Just before the film premiered, Nolan appeared in a commercial praising it, noting that Malick’s films are “immediately recognizable.” Set in 1950s America, the film follows a family of very different individuals as they reflect on life, death, and existence itself. It’s one of those films that’s best experienced without knowing too much beforehand.

The Tree of Life is available to stream on MAX. Perhaps it would be a good movie to watch after all the revenge and destruction we are currently experiencing while watching The Last of Us.
