The creator of ‘Squid Game’ is already thinking about the future and a new spin-off of the saga: “To show what they did”
Hwang Dong-hyuk hints at a new Squid Game project.

With Squid Game Season 3 set to be the final chapter of the hit Netflix series, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk is already thinking about the future, and possibly a spin-off. In a recent interview, Hwang revealed that if he were to create a new project, it would focus on what happened between Season 1 and Season 2, filling in the three-year gap between Gi-hun’s victory and his return to the deadly games.
What Would the Spin-Off Explore?
Hwang explained that the potential spin-off would shed light on events that were left unexplored, saying:
“If I make [a] spin-off, it will be a story happening between Season 1 and 2. There [was] a three years gap between Season 1 and 2. So, I want to show what they did for those times.”
This suggests that the series could delve into:
- Gi-hun’s struggles after winning the game—why he abandoned his plan to go to the U.S.
- The Front Man’s operations—how the games continued in secrecy.
- The VIPs and their influence—what role they played in shaping the next round of Squid Game.
Will It Actually Happen?
While Hwang has expressed interest in a spin-off, Netflix has not officially confirmed any new projects beyond Squid Game Season 3. However, given the show’s massive success, a spin-off could be a real possibility if the final season leaves room for more storytelling.
As Squid Game prepares to wrap up its main storyline, the idea of a spin-off exploring the missing years is an exciting prospect. Whether or not it happens, Hwang Dong-hyuk’s vision for the franchise proves that there’s still plenty of mystery left to uncover.
