The delay of GTA VI: Rockstar’s long history of postponing releases
Both previous GTA titles and Red Dead Redemption 2 faced delays before launch.

The news came as a surprise this past Friday: Grand Theft Auto VI is officially pushed to 2026. Rockstar Games has confirmed that the game will now launch on May 26, 2026, marking yet another delay in the studio’s history.
However, delays are nothing new for Rockstar. Looking at past releases, it’s clear that postponements are a recurring trend.
GTA’s delays
Originally scheduled for October 2007, GTA IV was delayed until April 29, 2008. At the time, Rockstar blamed PlayStation 3’s development challenges for the setback.
Rockstar initially planned to release GTA V in May 2013, but the game was ultimately pushed to September 17, 2013. The company issued a statement similar to the one for GTA VI, acknowledging fan disappointment while promising that the wait would be worth it.

Red Dead Redemption 2’s multiple delays
Unlike the GTA series, Red Dead Redemption 2 faced two separate delays:
- Originally set for fall 2017, it was postponed to spring 2018.
- It was then delayed again to October 26, 2018.
Will GTA 6 face another delay?
Now that GTA VI has a fixed release date, the question remains: will Rockstar stick to it?
With the game now scheduled for May 26, 2026, publishers planning late 2025 releases can breathe easier, knowing they won’t have to compete with Rockstar’s blockbuster.
