The first reviews of “A Minecraft Movie” are in, and they are not as bad as many expected
The new movie starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa hits theaters this week.

Adapting a video game to the big screen has always been a complicated task. Characters, details, and plots are usually changed - or even invented - in order to translate the story to the big screen. From the first trailer, it was expected that 'A Minecraft Movie' would take inspiration from the lore of Mojang’s video game, but combine it with the charisma of stars like Jack Black and Jason Momoa to bring the cubic world to life. Now that the movie has been released, the critics have given their verdict... and to the surprise of many, it hasn’t done too badly.
A Minecraft movie is getting a mixed reception
Early reactions suggest a lukewarm reception. On review aggregation sites like Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes, the movie sits in the middle of the pack, albeit with a slight tilt toward the negative. On Metacritic, A Minecraft Movie currently has a rating of 46 based on 34 reviews and a user rating of 5.5. On Rotten Tomatoes, the situation is similar, with a 47% approval rating from critics (based on 99 reviews), although the audience is more generous, giving it a rating of 83%.
Critical reviews have been mixed, with Slashfilm mentioning that “‘A Minecraft Movie’ is a broad, slapstick farce without a hint of seriousness, reverence, or coolness. The most shocking thing? It’s not terrible,” or Los Angeles Times “Half the time, Black’s dialogue is just announcing what we’re looking at, from diamond swords to flying hot air balloons that look like goth squids. But it’s the gleam in his eyes, the gusto in his delivery, that makes every line zing.”
On the other hand, not everyone was such a fan. Collider warned “Whether you like A Minecraft Movie solely depends on two things: your age and your experience with the video game. If you’ve been left puzzled by the trailers and have very little familiarity with the game, I’ll save you the time: don’t see this flick,” while Screen Rant finishes off with “Some of the best game movies have adventure, heart, humor & good characters. I wish I could say A Minecraft Movie had these things besides adventure.”
