The N symbol that you should have activated on your Android and iPhone, even if it consumes your battery

NFC technology is a powerful tool for payments, access, and automation.

Portada NFC

If you’ve ever noticed a small “N” symbol in your phone’s status bar, it represents Near Field Communication (NFC), a wireless technology that allows quick data transfers between nearby devices.

NFC is the backbone of contactless payments, enabling users to pay at stores, access public transportation, and connect with smart devices simply by tapping their phone.

For example, in Mexico City, NFC allows users to enter the Metro (subway) or Metrobús (street busses) using their smartphone, making daily commutes more convenient.

Which phones support NFC?

Most modern smartphones come with NFC built-in:

  • Android devices: NFC is usually enabled by default, though visibility varies by brand.
    • On Samsung Galaxy phones, the symbol appears in quick settings.
    • On Google Pixel and Nothing Phone models, NFC may be active without showing an icon.
  • iPhones: NFC is always enabled and cannot be turned off manually.
    • Apple integrates NFC into Apple Pay and Shortcuts, allowing users to automate tasks using NFC tags.

Does NFC drain battery?

A common concern is whether keeping NFC on affects battery life. The answer? Not significantly.

Since NFC only works at very short distances and activates only when needed, its energy consumption is minimal. There’s no practical reason to turn it off unless you’re in an untrusted public space where security might be a concern.

Is NFC secure?

Yes, NFC is safe to use, but like any wireless technology, it’s best to exercise caution in public places. If you’re not using NFC, you can temporarily disable it on Android (though iPhone users cannot turn it off).

Next time you see that small “N” on your phone, remember: it’s a powerful tool that makes payments, transportation, and automation easier than ever. And no, it won’t drain your battery.
