The original writer of a nearly forgotten trilogy calls for the return of a key character: “Why is it taking so long?”

David S. Goyer, writer of the original Blade trilogy, questions the delays in Marvel’s reboot starring Mahershala Ali.

Blade

David S. Goyer, who wrote all three films in the original Blade trilogy, recently spoke with ScreenRant about the long-delayed Marvel reboot. Expressing his frustration, Goyer said:

“I would. I’ve always loved the character and I love him, and I’ve been sitting on the sideline wondering, ‘What in the world is going on? Why is it taking so long?’ Because I’m a huge Marvel fan myself, and I’ve just been totally puzzled.”

Marvel announced the Blade reboot starring Mahershala Ali back in 2019, but the project has faced multiple delays, rewrites, and creative changes.

Blade’s impact on superhero cinema

The Blade trilogy, starring Wesley Snipes, was a pioneering franchise that helped shape the modern superhero film industry. Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, acknowledged its importance, stating:

“The one-two punch for Marvel, before my time, was ‘Blade’ and then ‘X-Men.’ Blade was a character that few people knew from the comics, but it proved that strong storytelling could make a film successful.”

Despite Blade’s cultural significance, Marvel’s reboot has struggled to move forward. The film has seen multiple writers and directors come and go, with some versions reportedly setting the story in the 1920s before shifting direction.

What’s next for Blade?

Marvel Studios has yet to confirm a production schedule or release date for the Blade reboot. Mahershala Ali remains attached to the project, with Mia Goth set to co-star as Lilith.

While Marvel has reassured fans that Blade will eventually join the MCU, the delays have left many —including Goyer—, wondering why it’s taking so long.
