Following the death of Pope Francis at age 88, ‘Conclave’, the Oscar-winning film starring Ralph Fiennes, has experienced a remarkable audience boost. According to Luminate, viewers have watched nearly 7 million minutes of ‘Conclave’, a film that explores the Vatican’s process of electing a new Pope.
However, ‘Conclave’ isn’t the only Catholic-themed film experiencing a resurgence. ‘The Two Popes’ (2019) has also seen a 417% increase in viewership on Netflix, jumping from 290,000 minutes watched to 1.5 million minutes.

A renewed interest in papal-themed films
Since the announcement of Pope Francis’ passing on April 21, audiences have turned to films that explore the papacy from different perspectives.
- ‘Conclave’, directed by Edward Berger, depicts the Vatican’s secretive selection process for a new Pope.

The timing of these films has led to a major spike in viewership, with ‘Conclave’ seeing a 283% increase since April 20.
