Dragon Ball

This is the never-before-seen transformation of Vegeta, as drawn by Akira Toriyama, that was discarded from Dragon Ball

The famous mangaka’s character design process was full of discarded designs, and this is one of them.

Super Vegeta Dragon Ball Z

Dragon Ball’ is one of the most famous manga and anime series in history, if not the most popular, thanks to the rich and surprising world created by Akira Toriyama. The series features characters of all kinds who are motivated by a single goal: to become the most powerful in the universe. And the fact is that the eleven years in which the famous mangaka worked tirelessly on the adventures of Goku and company gave a lot and good proof of this is all the material discarded by Toriyama himself that has been appearing over the years. These designs and sketches were part of Toriyama’s creative process, and Shueisha is sharing them through the official ‘Dragon Ball’ website.

This is what Super Vegeta looked like in his initial sketches

As fans will recall, the Androids and Cell sagas created an urgent need for Goku and Vegeta to surpass the strength of the Super Saiyans. The fact is that Androids 17 and 18 — not to mention Android 16 — were too powerful for the Z Warriors to defeat at their current power level, even with Piccolo fused with Kami. This is why Goku decided to train in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, where a day on Earth is one year inside. That was enough time to try to surpass the strength of the Super Saiyan, or in other words, to reach Super Saiyan level 2.

However, this location outside of space and time can only be accessed in pairs. They decide that Vegeta and Future Trunks will be the first to enter. After a year of training, they both manage to overcome the strength of the Super Saiyan. This gives rise to Super Vegeta, a much more powerful and muscular Super Saiyan state of the Prince of the Saiyans than his base form. With this level of power, he manages to put Cell in his second form on the ropes. But, as we know, Vegeta’s arrogance plays a trick on him again, allowing Cell to evolve to his perfect state.

But back to the aforementioned Super Vegeta, now Shueisha has shared some unpublished sketches of the character in this state by Toriyama himself. It’s a preliminary design of the character that would ultimately not be used, although it bears many similarities to the one we all know. And as we can see, this unpublished form of Super Vegeta is even more impressive and imposing than the one chosen by its creator, with an even more exaggerated musculature, with an obvious disproportion between body and head.

Finally, Toriyama opted for a more restrained design, although the original design already showed striking musculature. This state of Super Saiyan, which is halfway between Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan 2, greatly increases the warrior’s strength and power thanks to the development of his musculature. However, it negatively affects speed and agility, making it an unprofitable transformation for Vegeta and Trunks.
