Mavericks set a date for Cooper Flagg
The Dallas Mavericks clinched the No. 1 pick for the 2025 NBA Draft and they look set to use it on Duke’s freshman superstar.

Later this month the Dallas Mavericks will have the first overall pick at the 2025 NBA Draft and there’s not much doubt about who they will select.
Despite having only played one season in the NCAA, Duke University star Cooper Flagg looks like a lock for the No. 1 overall pick. Flagg was the dominant figure on a Duke team that got to the Final Four of the NCAA competition and the Mavs have made no secret of the fact that they plan to draft him.
On Sunday ESPN revealed the next step of that process. Cooper Flagg is scheduled to make a private visit to Dallas to work out with the team and get to know the organization.
Flagg has been tipped to be the No. 1 pick for this year’s draft since announcing his intention to leave high school a year early and enroll at Duke as a 17-year-old. He starred in his sole season with the Blue Devils, averaging 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.2 assists and winning every major national player of the year award.
Typically these pre-draft workouts are used to assess the fit for both player and team but that won’t be necessary this time around. The Mavs are not thought to be conducting any similar sessions with any other first round prospect and Flagg is not travelling elsewhere.
The Mavericks have dismissed any suggestion that they may consider trading the pick.
The 2024/25 NBA season ended on a very soul note for the Mavericks. The shock mid-season trade of talisman Luka Doncic extinguished hopes of a playoff finish and a major rebuild is clearly in order.
If the Mavericks are to get themselves back to championship contention in the coming years, it’s fair to assume that Cooper Flagg will need to be a key part of that journey.
