Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez secured a victory over William Scull in a lackluster bout that failed to deliver the expected spectacle. The Cuban fighter spent much of the match avoiding engagement, opting to move around the ring rather than actively competing. Frustrated by the approach, Álvarez didn’t hold back in his post-fight remarks.

The fight, held in Saudi Arabia, left Álvarez visibly irritated. “It was a boring fight. I hate this type of fighter—someone who isn’t trying to win, just trying to survive,” he said afterwards.

Out to go the distance

That’s why I don’t like fighting those kinds of opponents. They only aim to survive all 12 rounds, and that’s why I don’t like them. I hope September brings a different kind of fight,” he declared.

The Mexican didn’t mince words when telling Scull that fighting that way wouldn’t lead to greater success. Speaking to TV Azteca, Canelo revealed the exchange he had with his Cuban opponent. “He told me, ‘You know, it’s my first time here. I was nervous, and that’s why I fought like that. Sorry, champ.’”

It’s not just up to me. In the end, a great fight requires two fighters willing to put on a show,” he stated.

When is Canelo next in the ring?

Canelo is set to return to the ring on September 12, coinciding with Mexico’s Independence Day celebrations. The highly anticipated bout will pit him against Terence Crawford, a showdown fans have been eagerly awaiting.

Let’s hope this one turns out to be a great fight,” the Mexican concluded.
