Update:

Gervonta Davis (30-0-1, 28 KOs) is an extraordinary boxer. The American, currently the WBA lightweight champion, began boxing at the age of five, growing up in a dangerous neighborhood surrounded by crime and moving from one foster home to another. A video recently circulated on social media showing Davis at 10 years old, fighting another kid in the ring, already displaying some of his signature moves such as his hook.

Even at that young age, Davis showcased impressive footwork, great dodges and a sharp jab. Wearing a helmet and gloves that seemed bigger than him, the young American faced an opponent who was much taller, but dominated him. He already showed signs of having the quality to become one of the best in the world, a promise he eventually fulfilled.

Difficult early years in Baltimore

Davis had a tough childhood. Born in Baltimore on November 7, 1994, he was the youngest of three siblings. His father was in prison, and his mother lost custody due to drug use. He went through several foster homes and even an adoptive family until his grandmother gained custody three years later. Violence and crime were a constant part of his life, and at 15, he escaped from a car shooting in his neighborhood.

Davis started fighting with neighborhood kids at a very young age, even defending his brother who was seven years older. He joined a boxing gym and did everything he could to see his mother. Many of his gym mates and neighborhood friends were killed due to drugs and gang violence, but his coach, Calvin Ford, kept him on the right path.

A stellar boxing career

During his amateur career, Davis won the National Golden Gloves Championship in 2012, three Silver Gloves Championships, two National Junior Olympic gold medals and two Ringside World Championships, finishing with a record of 206 wins and only 15 losses. He debuted as a professional boxer in 2013, securing his first victory and knockout. He went on to become a world champion in three different divisions (super featherweight, lightweight and super lightweight) and established himself as one of the top fighters on the international scene.
