A golden year for American-led ‘football’ in Europe

As the European football season draws to a close, and with the Champions League final still to come – where Inter or PSG will claim the last major trophy of the year – the United States can already celebrate a year of remarkable success across the continent.

On Wednesday, Chelsea were crowned UEFA Conference League champions, the club’s first major trophy under Todd Boehly’s ownership. The victory places Boehly firmly among a growing list of American investors achieving success in Europe’s top leagues.

Chelsea now join Crystal Palace and Liverpool as English clubs under US ownership to lift silverware this season.

Liverpool, owned by Fenway Sports Group and led by new coach Arne Slot, captured the Premier League title for the first time in five years – a key objective for the American group and one of their most significant achievements to date.

Crystal Palace also earned a seat at this table of triumphs after defeating Manchester City to win the FA Cup, a stunning upset by John Textor’s Eagles over the heavy favorites.

Inter can close out a big year for American-owned clubs

The season could yet deliver one final high for American-led clubs.

Inter Milan, owned by Oaktree Capital, are preparing to face PSG in the Champions League final. Should the Italian side claim the title, it would seal a spectacular year for clubs steered from US boardrooms, adding the Champions League trophy to an already impressive American collection.
