Although Pachuca’s board is yet to accept Guillermo Almada’s resignation, Los Tuzos are on the hunt for a new head coach and are said to have set their sights on Matías Almeyda.
Pachuca eye Almeyda amid Almada stand-off
The situation at Pachuca is tense. Last week, rumors circulated that Almada had submitted his resignation. However, the club maintained its stance that the Uruguayan coach has a contract until 2026, and any team looking to hire him would need to pay a buyout clause.
But with Almada’s future up in the air, Pachuca are making preparations to replace him and are reported to be pursuing Almeyda, who has previously coached in Mexico at Chivas Guadalajara.
According to César Merlo, Pachuca have made contact with the Argentinian, who is not ruling out the possibility of joining the seven-time Liga MX champions.
From Pachuca to Spain?
Almeyda, who recently left Greek club AEK Athens, is reported to have been offered a long-term contract to take over at the Estadio Hidalgo. The 51-year-old is understood to be attracted by Pachuca’s focus on youth development.
What’s more, Merlo has revealed that the Liga MX club has floated the possibility of handing Almeyda a future post as coach of the Spanish club Real Oviedo, which is also owned by Grupo Pachuca.
Tuzos preparing for CWC
Pachuca hope Almeyda will lead the team at the upcoming Club World Cup, which starts in mid-June.
Los Tuzos have been drawn in Group H alongside Al Hilal, Real Madrid and Salzburg, with their opening match set for June 18 against the Austrians.
